What I Have Learned from #GIRLBOSS By Sophia Amoruso

Welcome to the first post in my #SundaySelfcareSeries!

Instead of writing about the usual Sunday essentials i.e. face mask, bubble bath - I thought i'd write about a self-help book i've been reading on Sundays. I've read the book before but forgot half the lessons the author Sophia Amoruso taught us! So grab a hot drink and read on to find out what I have learnt from #GIRLBOSS ๐Ÿ˜Š

This book is by Sophia Amoruso, founder of Nasty Girl and the true GIRLBOSS out there. She talks about her journey which lead her on the way to owning a multi-million dollar business๐Ÿ‘€  In 2012 Inc. Magazine named Nasty Girl as one of "the fastest growing companies". In 2016 Forbes magazine named her as one of the richest self-made women in the world.  She's pretty amazing isn't she? This isn't just a book but its a guide that teaches you when you work hard, you can accomplish anything.

My favourite quote from the book is "you combine hard work, creativity, and self-determination, and things start to happen". In the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert she clearly mentions we are all creative in our own ways. So like Amoruso says, combine that with hard work and self-determination and you will accomplish anything!

What I have learned:

1. How humble & real Sophia is. Despite having huge success and having all these titles, she never loses sight of who she is. That is an amazing quality to have because she doesn't let fame and success get to her. She is true to who she is and I believe this is what has helped get her where she is today.

2. Focus on doing what you love๐Ÿ’— She had a vision and started her business selling vintage clothes to customers. This is something she really enjoyed and she kept at it - she was working her craft and constantly looking for ways to improve. This makes you develop a sense of purpose at work and you have something to look forward to which isn't 'just a job'.

3. Hard work. Successful people work HARD and Amoruso is an example of this. She says she didn't enjoy school and once it was over, she had random jobs like working at Subway. However, she learned from each job and this has truly prepared her for the position she's in today. In the beginning stages of her business, she used to wake up at 6am every morning and wait in line at a thrift store. She pays attention to detail and makes sure everything is right. She also says "imagine a pair of shoes being made out of 20 dollar bills, would you really want to put them on the floor to 'walk'? "ask yourself, 'is it worth it?". Working hard and purchasing things you really want is a good feeling.

4. Dress the part! "Granted, I could probably negotiate a deal in my pyjamas, but i'm a lot more dangerous in a pair of leather pants and boots that could hurt a fool". How inspirational is this quote?! Most of the time I want to be comfy and lounge around in leggings but dressing nice makes you feel so much better and alive.

5. Keep moving forward ๐Ÿ‘Š Amoruso has experienced a lot in life and she's also learnt a fair amount with each experience. So why not try something new? Look for opportunities to grow and feel alive! Learn anything you want to learn. Keep progressing and keep teaching yourself. You are in control of your life so do what you have to do.

If you haven't already pleaseee pick up a copy of this book and give it a read. This book has taught me so much and I can't wait to finish reading it. It also uncovered my love for the self-help/self-care genre ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ’–

P.s Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert is another favourite in this genre. Give it a read too.

Have you read #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso? What have you learned?

  3. Sophia Amoruso is truly an inspiration. Have you seen the Netflix TV series about her? I loved how gutsy she was about everything, even though she felt vulnerable she kept fighting for her dream.
